Beloved cricket legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott shares shocking cancer diagnosis

Beloved cricket legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott has revealed he has been diagnosed with throat cancer for the second time.

The 83-year-old man will undergo surgery later this month in an attempt to beat the disease he was first diagnosed with in 2002, when he was 62.

In a statement to London’s Daily Telegraph, Boycott said: “Over the past few weeks I have had an MRI scan, CT scan, PET scan and two biopsies and it has now been confirmed that I have throat cancer and will require surgery.

“I know from experience that to beat cancer a second time, you need excellent medical treatment and a good dose of luck. And even if the surgery is successful, every cancer patient knows that he or she has to live with the possibility of the disease coming back.

“So I just keep going and hope for the best.”

Boycott played 108 Tests for England and scored 151 first-class centuries in a career spanning 25 years.

He then spent 14 years as a commentator on the BBC’s Test Match Special, before retiring in 2020.

Fans were quick to react when they heard the news.

“Terrible news. Stay strong Geoffrey Boycott, you’ll fight it again!” reads the Armchair Cricket Podcast account.

“Get well soon champ. I hope and pray you beat this disease the second time around,” said another business account.

And one fan said: “Damn. So sorry to hear this. Good luck Geoffrey Boycott. A hero of mine who grew up where he was born and watched him go through my childhood.
