New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas’ long-term future with the team is reportedly still uncertain, even as the club eyes a 2024 playoff run.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Douglas is entering the final year of his contract, calling him “a rare GM who didn’t sign an extension before his contract expired.”

However, Rapoport added that “all parties are happy with the position.”

It does increase the pressure a bit for a team that hasn’t reached the postseason since the 2010 campaign and has gone 7-10 back-to-back seasons. But the talent on this roster is there to change that, with Aaron Rodgers leading the way up the middle and Douglas draftees like Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner controlling both sides of the ball.

New York also had expectations for the Super Bowl last season, but those were quickly underestimated when Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon in the first game.

Those expectations are returning for the future Hall of Famer, and Rapoport suggested that “Douglas’ situation will likely resolve itself” if the team achieves its realistic goals.

There are a lot of risks involved when you’re depending on a 40-year-old quarterback who’s just come off a bad injury and with pass rusher Haason Reddick still out. But the stars are there, including Rodgers, Wilson, Breece Hall, Gardner and Quinnen Williams.

Douglas gets credit for bringing all those stars together, which could help him in future contract negotiations.

For now, the final season of his current contract begins Monday with a game against the San Francisco 49ers.
