Mexico eliminated from Copa America after 0-0 draw with Ecuador – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Mexico is out.

El Tri drew 0-0 with Ecuador in their final match of Group B on Sunday, cementing their third place and preventing them from progressing to the knockout stages of the Copa America.

Mexico dominated most of the match against Ecuador, with the latter playing mainly on the counter, with 34-year-old Enner Valencia acting as the main transition channel.

However, Valencia largely could not do much on their own, while El Tri dominated the statistics without the results showing it.

El Tri had 0.85 expected goals, via FotMob, on 19 total shots and four missed big chances. Ecuador, by comparison, had just 0.42 expected goals on nine total shots and no big chances.

Mexico were awarded a penalty in the last second when Guillermo Martinez fell in the penalty area, but the spot-kick was disallowed when Felix Torres received the ball during his attempted tackle.

The result dropped Mexico to 1-1-1 in the group stage. It defeated Jamaica in the group stage opener, but lost to Venezuela.

Venezuela won the group thanks to three straight victories, while Ecuador finished in second place with the same record as Mexico, but advanced thanks to a better goal difference (plus-one to nil).
