Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to receive a huge transfer fee to do business with in the January transfer window, after making only a minimal investment in the summer.

City only strengthened their Premier League-winning squad with the £21m arrival of Brazilian talent Savinho, while former captain Ilkay Gundogan also returned on a free transfer from Barcelona.

The City manager only invests in players he believes can make a difference to his team, which has dominated the English top flight for the past decade and won the Champions League last year.

A brilliant start to the season, including Erling Haaland’s back-to-back hat-tricks in convincing wins over Ipswich and West Ham, saw City top of the Premier League ahead of the international break.

Rivals can now expect City to cause them further misery after club officials decided to give Guardiola a £100m budget to spend in the short January window – a month that often sees less action than the summer, The Sun has revealed.

That money could be spent on bringing in another star player, for the same amount as was invested in Jack Grealish when he joined from Aston Villa three years ago, breaking the then British transfer record.

Another option could be that they choose to expand their squad with investments in players with future potential. That is what they did with former Belgian talent Jeremy Doku.

Guardiola has regretted Julian Alvarez’s decision to cut short his time at City and join Atletico Madrid for £81million, saying he wanted to keep the Argentine striker at the club.

Bringing in another striker is likely to give Haaland – who is now the only recognised striker in City’s first team – more rest.

If the Norwegian is injured, Guardiola would either have to promote one of the club’s academy talents to the demanding role or move one of his other stars into a different position.

City have previously shown interest in German prospects Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, but it is unlikely that either attacker will leave their current teams midway through the season.
