The Razorbacks’ success has been overshadowed by a chronic football problem

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas football is nine weeks away from kickoff, and basketball is even further away. While everyone waits in elusive anticipation for the Razorbacks to take the field, the rest of the Hog athletic department has continued to pile on the success.

The Hogs have already qualified four Razorbacks for the U.S. track and field team, with more potential qualifiers to come. A bit of a long story on this site since there are no other sports going on right now, but more importantly, these athletes deserve their moment.

An incoming gymnastics commit is in the running to make the team. While football appears set to struggle again in the ever-competitive SEC, the rest of the athletic department has persevered to save the Hogs.

Established in 1993 to measure holistic success across all sports, the Directors’ Cup isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to measuring a department’s success and isn’t exactly the best social media cannon fodder to compete against others fan bases to argue. It should mean something though, Arkansas only has 19 college sports, a relatively low number.

The Hogs were the top finisher playing as many or fewer sports, ranking 18th with a total of 921.75 points, their fourth straight finish in the Top 20. If you’re going to play the sport, you might as well be successful at it . Volleyball reached the elite eight for the first time. Gymnastics broke every school record in the book. It’s perhaps not surprising that the women’s track and field team, which made a statement at the Trials, racked up 100 points by winning a national title.

There are coaches on campus who deserve to be celebrated and have consistently achieved success. While it will never come down to the fanfare of football or men’s basketball, especially when those two sports are not in action, they should be celebrated and given the proper flowers. So before football potentially capitulates to itself again. Let’s state the obvious: enjoy the successes, big or small, to make the losses a little less painful.
